I was listening to something today on youtube where someone was talking about organizing an auction. They said only 4yrs and upward would be considered because younger horses are not of riding age and are only prospects. There is a ton of debate in the horse world about all of it and honestly everyone is entitled to their opinions. I guess mine is simply that there is a ton of low impact mileage that can be put on horses to build a beautiful foundation for the future. We do a lot of trails, hacking out, going off the farm, exposing horses to all the things we can think of in a quiet slow manner. Trotting over small jumps and basic quality flatwork with short easy sessions. I often give them weeks off in between work and they always just pick right back up so nicely. So yes I suppose they are just prospects but someone has to be starting the prospects right????
Right now I have a TON and I really mean a ton of 3yrs in my barn. All at various stage of training but none do anything more than 2x a week for the most part and a lot of that is trails and off the farm experiences to just learn about being a horse.
Will is one of our 3yr's that I just think is an incredible horse for anyone. Yes, he is a 3yr but when I say he is an old soul that anyone would feel comfortable going out on I truly mean it. I get a LOT of 3yrs like this and I realize most people are so anti young horses but boy they truly are fun!!!!
Will- 3yr 15.3 h gelding sired by Hottest Cat in Town (AQHA cutting horse) out of a clyde/paint mare. I bought Will from awesome people in Canada who put a fantastic start on him!
I knew he was really cool but honestly he has just blew us away. He can seriously seriously move. Right now he looks like spare parts in some ways as he is seriously growthy but when they move like this as a 3yr and have his brain you better pay attention! He has just been absolutely brilliant since arriving. His groundwork is very good and he is just coming along each ride learning to use his body, push from behind and work over his back. The trot is just crazy on him and the canter is so lovely. Just watch that hind leg!
He has the best best brain. Just been unflappable coming into a new place with so much going on. Been very good for turnout, stall, grooming, tacking, etc.
He traveled off the farm for multiple trail rides and was absolutely awesome and he has had several rides out in the field at home as well. Traffic, water, ditches, logs, trappy footing, etc. Check out his trail videos! We introduced him to jumping with some of the jumps in the XC field and my gosh he just took right to it showing beautiful form on his first time jumping. He then popped over to our local xc schooling facility and once again was just perfect. I really just can't say enough good things about this horse!
I think with the brain and movement on this one he is truly will go up the levels. I can tell you he has such an incredible scopey jump and boy can he move! The brain is just amazing. He is so much fun and at his age he is as reliable/safe as they get. He is a horse that travels off the farm and is the same exact horse. Loads, unloads, ties to the trailer, etc. No buddy drama. Happy to lead or follow. Truly a good boy.
