Someone recently said my lord you have a LOT of 3yrs in your barn and uh I really do. I LOVE 3yrs. I think there is something to be said for finding quality young horses, giving them glow ups, improving their education and showing them off enough that someone can then recognize the talent. My group of riders does an incredible job with young horses. The reality is that horses are expensive and often when you want something nice you have to buy a bit younger and bring it along. If you are looking for quality 3yr's, I really do have a barn full :) I refuse to count how many and I have four stashed in fields and two at the trainers.
Anyway, I recently purchased this lovely guy off the sport horse online auction but had been following him on facebook for a while.
Luca- 3yr 16h wb/draft x gelding registered as American WB. He just looked like a super fun young horse to continue to develop. His connections have had him since he was weaned and have done an incredible job starting him!
He is out of a young Dutch Warmblood stallion who has started competing in the green hunter class and his dam is a full Percheron used for driving. His sire is 16.3 hands and dam is 17.1 hands tall so he has a lot of growing left to do!
They had been bringing along Luca exactly as a young horse should be developed. Learning to load on the trailer, crossties, baths, clipping, lunging, driving, long lining and so much more. He has done desensitization with tarps, flags, bags, balls, boxes, etc. He has been started under saddle and is doing everything a growing 3yr should be doing! He has even went to a show where he was ridden around, in every arena, near hunter jumps, and through an obstacle course. He has been on trail rides and gone over bridges, through water, and through tall overgrown plants. He has been free jumped and jumped over 4 ½ feet.
We did our first ride in western tack and Justin declared him PERFECT! Seriously, when people start their horses right it just shows and this horse is just as lovely as they come. I don't know if it is even possible to have a better start. He was lovely w/t/c, soft in the bridle, good off the leg, did a slow jog/lope, popped over a xrail and was just mature beyond his years. He is kind and snuggly. He has walked into my barn like he has been here forever. What a quality young horse. Can't wait to do more! If anything he is a bit too quiet but I mean that really is NOT a thing in my book. You can always make them more but often not less :)
His next several rides have all gone just as well. He is learning to be straight, go forward, push from behind and starting to really show what exactly will be in there. Also look at the jump on this horse! I am telling you think one has something special. I just know it when I see it and he is going to be super incredible.
