I also haven't talked about Pegasus in a long long while. I got Pegasus with three others from the same breeders. Those horses were all super duper simple to get going/break. Pegasus however came to us as an already 17.1+ h 4yr that really wasn't super well handled. He was friendly but at that age and size he learned he could just get away from you when he wanted to. The Justin's said nope this one needs more than we are capable of doing so I reached out to Sam at Harmony Hollow Equine. They are Amish and do a very very good job starting a ton of horses and I figured they would have some experience with one like him. I just felt like I needed to get this horse going or he was going to end up a bad place so I spent some darn good money just because I was worried about his future.
He wasn't mean at all but I think fear can make things challenging. No reason he should have had fear because all of his pasture mates were so friendly/easy but for whatever reason he wanted to be reactive with various things. It was a slow reaction but more of a hey I am just going to leave..okay...BYE. You would be dragging trying to hold him. He needed to learn to respect being tied, pressure, etc.
Sam had him for about five months give or take and really did an amazing job getting him going. He is a much different horse now. He did a lot of ring work and out of the ring work with him. I honestly wish I had lived closer so I could have observed more. It's funny to see how light and soft this giant horse rides. That canter...it's lovely for a huge horse. Justin said he feels like riding a couch. We are still working on the mounting which needs to get worked out because well not everyone can mount 17.3 h from the ground. I do think he will figure it out though. Once he learns something he really has it down. I know Sam had gotten all this worked out but of course whenever you bring a horse to a new place/new people they will resort back to some behaviors so you just need to work through it. We are happy with him with just a week or so of riding on him since coming back. He is going to be an amazing partner for someone wanting a big yet athletic horse.
We are still working on his glow up :)
