Kahuna is a gorgeous 16.1 h 14yr draft cross. He had been with his owner many years and she used him as a trail guide horse for years. He has extensive miles on the trails and is as dependable as they come. She described him as a very athletic type that has more go than whoa and would love an active job. She told us that he was food motivated and a bit bossy in the field. I would say all of that is spot on :) Personally, I like the athletic draft crosses for my customers. Theses are the types that maybe have been western and trail horses so they have great mileage but can be easily switches over to the english disciplines. He had just been sitting and she felt like he really really wanted a job. He is out of shape at the moment but will easily be brought back to work.
Kahuna has been excellent for shipping, baths, grooming, wash stall, etc. He got his teeth done over the weekend and he did probably have one of the worse mouths that I have seen so he should feel like a very different horse here soon! My dentist made me come look it was just so awful. Poor dude.
Now I suspect he really doesn't have a lot of english miles or even miles in the ring but he was just so cute that I am obsessed. He wants to make a really cute shape in the bridle. I think he is still not convinced his mouth doesn't hurt so that might take a bit. He is a nice mover! He is out of shape and lacking muscle at the moment but I can picture him in a month or two of good feeding and work. Such a great canter. He was relaxed, quiet and willing for everything we asked of him. It was out and we kept it short and sweet since he isn't fit but I really thought he was just such a good boy. Can't wait to hit the trail on him!
Kahuna headed out to the field for his second ride and gosh I just adore this horse. He is just so safe/dependable and fun! He is picking up everything we are teaching him so quickly but I think anyone could ride him. I bet he will be quite cute here very soon as he is learning how to stretch and make a little cute shape. He is just a nice type and a good mover. We have some trail rides planned and I can't wait!
