Jake is a 15.3 h 6yr shire/qh gelding also bred/raised/started by his previous owner. Jake is going to be a STUNNER here soon enough but he has been wintering 🙂 I was told Jake was green but had been ridden in the ring/trails.

The video is rather hilarious and maybe some wouldn't show it but this is the reality of where we start a LOT of times and there is nothing wrong with showing where a sales horse is starting. Honestly, if anything it makes you see our process and know we are transparent. I lunged Jake yesterday and I said if any of them are green this would be the one. He just seemed like he knew what to do but was rusty. He lunged better today. He stood good to be mounted but the steering was pretty much nonexistent. I had Justin come with Stella so we could just put Jake on Stella's butt and get him going around. So we trotted/cantered around following Stella and he was like yep cool got it.

Then when asked to go on his own he was like nope totally don't have it 🙂 I always find some of this looks a bit ugly and we have to cowboy them around a bit but you have to get them moving their feet forward first. You can't steer if they don't go forward so we just encourage forward in any fashion. If that means they break to the canter then reward and just keep on trucking around a bit.

I mean yes we will go back and install some more buttons from the lunging/ground but we had sort of gotten on him so sometimes you got to just get ride one done and see what you are starting with right?

I can tell you I really like this horse and none of this is remotely abnormal when starting a young green draft x. He doesn't do anything naughty and in a few rides he will look so different which I think is the coolest process. He is really a great mover and that canter!
