It's a cool thing to have a horse that ran in the Preakness even if he did run last :)
Fenwick- 7yr 16.3 h gelding sired by Curlin out of a Malibu Moon mare https://www.pedigreequery.com/fenwick5 He had 29 starts for 117k running on the flat and over fences. He even ran in the Preakness finishing last but hey he still ran in the Preakness which is very cool to me! He just didn't quite have the finish for steeplechasing so they chose to retire him. He last raced in January of 2026. Sound, no vices and no injuries minus the minimal scar from his fence incident.
In April of 2025 he sliced his right front in fencing requiring quite the stitch job which has resulted in a thicker profile to that ankle but it is cosmetic. The joint was flushed and xrays were good at that time.
Fenwick arrived to us right after the ice/snow event that essentially crippled us for multiple weeks. We spent some time doing his teeth/feet and starting some lunging/groundwork. This boy has the absolute best best manners. He is excellent to ship, clip, baths, grooming, etc. Doesn't even care if you clip his bridlepath/muzzle/etc will stand there sleeping. He is extremely chill in turnout/stall and all the things considering our weather that is a real plus. You can just tell this horse has only know the best. He is quite the personality and hard not to love.
I always feel like the older horses that have been going for a bit really benefit from some lunging in side reins and vienna reins to start to teach them to stretch down and loosen up the body. It has been fun to watch him start to change shape in the time that we have had him. He really is learning to stretch over his back and is finding some understanding of the contact. Sometimes the really good racehorses can be fairly braced/strong in the bridle and that was the case with him. They have to learn to sit down and push vs pull which is a process.
We had Fenwick going really really great in his flatwork and then the weather hit and his hind feet decided the snow/ice/wet was not cool. We ended up putting glue on shoes for his hind feet so he can grow some foot. He is way more comfortable now and I think that shows in his body!
He is really just coming along so nicely and starting to understand the connection under saddle that translated over from the lunging. He is soft and stretchy! He is moving nicely laterally off the leg. He is a stunning horse that makes a beautiful shape in his body. I suspect we haven't even begun to uncover all this horse is capable of doing but it is a slow and steady process.
The weather finally cooperated and we got to pop him over some jumps. Obviously he had steeplechased so he jumps but that doesn't always mean they know much about jumping in the ring. He LOVED it and was so happy to do something besides that flatwork haha. He was brave and just adorable. I know he will just get better as he goes but very cute for a first session!
