Fenwick- 7yr 16.3 h gelding sired by Curlin out of a Malibu Moon mare https://www.pedigreequery.com/fenwick5 He had 29 starts for 117k running on the flat and over fences. He even ran in the Preakness finishing last but hey he still ran in the Preakness which is very cool to me! He just didn't quite have the finish for steeplechasing so they chose to retire him. He last raced in January of 2026.
In April of 2025 he sliced his right front in fencing requiring quite the stitch job which has resulted in a thicker profile to that ankle but it is cosmetic. The joint was flushed and xrays were good at that time.
Fenwick arrived to us right after the ice/snow event that essentially crippled us for multiple weeks. We spent some time doing his teeth/feet and starting some lunging/groundwork. This boy has the absolute best best manners. He is excellent to ship, clip, baths, grooming, etc. Doesn't even care if you clip his bridlepath/muzzle/etc will stand there sleeping. He is extremely chill in turnout/stall and all the things considering our weather that is a real plus. You can just tell this horse has only know the best. He is quite the personality and hard not to love.
I always feel like the older horses that have been going for a bit really benefit from some lunging in side reins and vienna reins to start to teach them to stretch down and loosen up the body. He was fairly braced in the contact so starting on the ground does wonders especially when the weather is yuck. He had several sessions and what a transformation already in him starting to seek out the contact and stretch across his body. He is a very big mover but sometimes in the beginning we would rather just say look slow and stretchy. I am careful to understand this work uses very new muscles and I do think you must be considerate of them using all new parts of their body which often makes them a bit ouchy starting out. It's no different than us starting a new workout program so all normal transition but don't overdue it!
He had his first ride yesterday after doing the lunge work previously and he was absolutely awesome! It was a busy ring with other horses being ridden and things going on. The footing is gross from all the melting snow/ice but they will be used to water :) He really was taking everything we started on the lunge and figuring that out under tack so we were super happy. This is just a very very classy horse in all the ways. Huge gorgeous horse that is a lovely mover. Three super nice gaits! He ran over fences so I know he jumps and while I would love to see it my ring is also still partially frozen so we need to be patient.....wah!!!!!!!!!!!!
