Elvis is a 6yr 16h crossbred gelding. His dna report said cleveland bay/selle francais but I honestly would almost say he is a draft cross. I got Elvis in the fall as a sales horse but he was such a good foxhunter we held onto him through foxhunting season. He is also just one of those horses that we could take anywhere and do anything with so I was holding onto him as a personal horse but the reality is I am far too busy to keep him consistently going as a personal horse!
Elvis is an absolutely stunning horse and everywhere we go with him people aways stop to ask about him. We have done such a variety of things with him and I think his strength is that he is one of the best all around types you will find. He is probably one of the most broke horses we have had come through. He is just one that makes you think damn this is fun! He also makes you feel like you can really ride which is always a bonus :)
He will foxhunt first or second field on the buckle just as easy as they come. He hunted with Wicomico this season. He isn't the "fastest" horse so he may be a bit too slow for a big hunts first field but if you had him really fit I think he could keep up. If you like the kind of horse that will allow you to ride anywhere in the field he sure is that. He just doesn't feel the need to compete out there. He will trail ride anywhere and everywhere you want to go. Just throw him on the trailer and go. Bridges, water, traffic, etc all no big deal. He will lead or he will follow. He doesn't get amped up.
He has been really working on his dressage and enjoyed some dressage shows over the winter. He is just lovely to ride on the flat with perfect transitions, smooth gaits and is very consistent. I wouldn't say he is "flashy" but consistency and trainability goes a very long way and he is just extremely schooled. He is more of a leg ride. Some will find him a bit on the slow side but that also suits many riders as well.
He was broke by a very good reining trainer and that training absolutely shows. There is no reason this horse could not be super competitive in ranch shows, western dressage and I could even see him kicking butt at the working equitation classes that are becoming popular. He is so broke off the leg, excellent transitions, soft in the mouth, turns on a time, excellent "whoa" button, lateral work is excellent. He is so darn nice under western tack!
He jumps around courses in the ring and out xc. I would say he does his changes but they are not "auto." I think with as balanced as his canter is they will come but we also have done a lot out of the ring riding with him than in the ring riding. He has an excellent form over a fences and is extremely easy to ride. He is the type that keeps a good rhythm and you just support with leg. The bigger the jump, the better he jumps.
Elvis is a very quiet type of horse but in my opinion he does best with a rider that is assertive. I don't feel like you even need to be a great rider just confident in making decisions if that makes sense? He is super quiet, broke and tolerant so much so that I would call him beginner friendly but it is more just about someone who isn't scared. If you tell him what to do he is all about it but if you walk up to him and act nervous then I think he starts to wonder if maybe he should be too :) I feel like the best horses just thrive in the right program so I am picky about his.
He has excellent ground manners. Clips, ties, great for grooming, baths, farrier, vet, etc. He trailers everywhere and will stand tied. He is excellent in turnout and in his stall. He is very gentle and respectful. He does not appreciate rough handling. I think at some point he may have had some rough handling so he will cower a bit if you get aggressive with him for any reason and with him there is never a reason you need to be.
He has been extremely sound in hard work. No injuries and has no vices. He is currently barefoot and is an easy keeper. He gets along well with others in the field. He has ZERO buddy issues. He is perhaps the most independent horse that I have ever met.
The one negative thing about him is that he can sometimes be hard to catch. Now, it's not always as most of the time he is good but on occasion he will give me the finger. I keep pressure on him until he just gives in and comes to me but he is not food or buddy motivated like some :)
