Foxhunters take note of this one. I realize not everyone loves a 3yr but I personally think they simply are the most fun ever to develop. I feel like a proud parent each ride watching them grow. This is a very special type of horse with the absolute best brain and most hilarious personality.
Deputy Merlin is a 3yr 17h (still growing) registered American WB gelding his breeding is clyde/tb cross. Yes, he is a big boy but he is light and athletic. The size of bone and gorgeous feet on this one are sought after in the hunt field. When I had him vetted the vet told me this one is built to last! That being said he is still a big horse and we very much are just doing casual work with him.
I bought him from his owner who purchased him as a yearling. She put an awesome foundation on him. He had learned excellent ground work, had jumped a bit out xc off the lunge and was lightly backed in the winter. He hit a growth spurt in the winter so he didn't do anything more until he arrived here. We have put a few more rides on him both in the ring and out in the field. We also trailered him off farm for his first trail ride where he was an absolute rockstar. Everything about this horse has impressed me since I met him. He is just so curious which means not much scares him. He is the type that wants to walk up and sniff scary stuff.
He is so balanced to ride for his size it is almost a bit amazing so if he is this nice now I just cannot wait to see him in another year. The canter is just dreamy! He is light and not a heavy type. He even has popped over some tiny little stuff in the field and he was just like hey this is cool. He is not spooky or silly. He is not bothered by other horses coming at him or behind him. Dogs....he thinks he wants to sniff them all. There is just nothing reactive about him. He is just such a ho hum everything is cool kind of horse.
We took him trail riding with an experienced group. He loaded perfectly. Stood tied to the trailer. I actually have no idea if he had worn western tack but he seemed like he didn't notice. He was maybe one of the calmest out there. Just seemed like he truly enjoyed himself. Happily walked along. He would lead or follow. He went across bridges, through water, had traffic pass him and much more. Didn't even bat an eye at the scary machines digging out the pond.
With his brain everything leads me to say he will be an amazing hunt horse. These types are just hard to find. He could have any other job as well because he is just so nice.
He is sound, no injuries, no vices and currently barefoot. He has excellent manners. He is the most hilarious nosey horse you will ever meet. His mission in life is to sniff everything and just touch all the things. He has not met a person he doesn't want to follow around like a dog. He truly is that in your pocket kind of a horse. While he is a big horse his manners are excellent. Sometimes he doesn't love walking into the wash stall but so far that is the worse thing I can say about him.
Right now he is at the five carrots starting with a 2 then a 5 but that will change quickly. Finding something like this is not easy and he is one that I think someone could probably market for mid 5 carrots easily in VA hunt country. He is that special.
Located in Delaware. He is a 3yr so I am not interested in doing a ton of test rides on this horse at the moment. He has shown exactly what he is but doesn't need a ton of people sitting on him as he is still developing.
